Who is Mattia Biagi?

Mattia Biagi is an Italian multidisciplinary artist and designer born in 1974 in Ravenna, Italy, who currently lives and works in Los Angeles. His work is characterized by a “very personal investigation on transformation and preservation,” often merging the worlds of fine art, design, and high fashion.

"Black Tar" Projects
Biagi evokes emotions and memories in the observer, forcing a new perspective on the object.
"Black Tar" Teddies
The project acts as a "magic ritual" where objects are preserved through destruction. The tar acts as both a protective layer and a void that recontextualizes the object.
The Panama Bronze Chair
He collaborated with Promemoria to create an iconic piece where a traditional chair was encased in tar and then cast in bronze.
Practice and Mediums: Biagi is perhaps best known for his “Black Tar” projects, where he dips domestic and iconic objects into black tar, a medium inspired by the La Brea Tar Pits in Los Angeles. His diverse portfolio includes:

Sculpture & Multimedia: Works in bronze, marble, wood, ceramic, aluminum, and gesso.

Metropolitan Sets: A series of sculptural collages that utilize a lifetime archive of images (from magazines and personal photos) to explore his subconscious.

Design & Fashion: Before becoming an independent artist, Biagi worked for major fashion houses such as Valentino, Giorgio Armani, and Jean Paul Gaultier.

Motototem
At Salone del Mobile.Milano 2025, the art world and motorcycle cognoscenti bore witness to an extraordinary unveiling. Motototem is a singular creation born from the collaboration between Los Angeles-based multidisciplinary artist Mattia Biagi and Flying Flea, the nascent electric vehicle marque under Royal Enfield’s storied banner. No mere motorcycle, this is a profound artistic statement—a kinetic sculpture that elevates the Flying Flea C6 into a realm where craftsmanship, nature, and technology converge with breathtaking elegance.
Interior Design
In addition to his fine art, Biagi spent 16 years as a senior designer at Minotti Los Angeles, where he worked on luxury residential and commercial projects. He continues to offer customized interior design services through his own studio, blending bespoke furniture with contemporary and vintage elements.
In his interior work, Biagi focuses on “customized environments” that juxtapose contemporary bespoke furniture with vintage elements. He recently launched a fine art lounge on Sunset Boulevard to showcase his limited-edition furniture, which he describes as “sculptures in marble”
